Statistical SEO – Part 2

Statistical SEOWhen you look at the top 1,000 sites by global traffic (Alexa Rankings), you find 25 websites that you should pay attention to when thinking about your content optimization strategy. You read a lot about Yahoo being in a death spiral, but they are still the 4th most visited website in the world. Does this have implications for capturing traffic from directories? It just might – Yellow Pages, White Pages and Dmoz have significant traffic, but nowhere as much as Yahoo. Statistically, Yahoo may be a better bet when thinking about where to include your company name in prominent directories.

A second observation here is around search engine share. Bing has a larger search engine share than Yahoo, but Yahoo has more traffic – implying that Yahoo visitors are consuming much more content.

Third, if you had to choose just one content syndication platform what would it be? Statistically, Tumblr has significantly more traffic than Reddit. Is Tumblr a better choice? Maybe, but it depends upon if your content is a good fit or not (e.g., is there a named category for your content or business). The important issue here is to make sure that you understand the traffic eco-systems of the platforms you choose to target for content syndication.

Fourth, the top ten websites are really about Search, Content and Social Media platforms. The remaining are all about content syndication. Strictly from a statistical traffic view, these are the top 25 websites you should be paying attention to when developing a SEO Road Map and a Content Syndication Strategy. Of course this is generic list. If you are a Lawyer, or are in Healthcare you have an additional set of websites and directories that should be added to this list.
